Chapter 236 -: 235 Fearless couple union.[5]
"Hey, you should have taught me this language!"
"But you said there was no need. You told me you would pretend to be mute, remember? How was I supposed to know you would suddenly change your mind?"
"Enough! I know I said that, but didn’t you also say you would do anything for me? Then why the fuck didn’t you teach me? And how do you even know this language so well?"
The man looked at her for a moment before answering.
"I learned it at the academy. Remember when I told you about those spies in the academy? I spent months pretending to be one of them. That’s when I learned the language."
The woman stared at him. Then she groaned and covered her face.
"Ahhh! I should have learned it before."
The pair continued arguing as they walked through the village.
Everyone else simply watched.
No one understood a word they were saying, but that hardly mattered. The woman’s annoyed expression and the man’s increasingly helpless responses painted a fairly clear picture.
Even the village chief found himself staring.
A moment ago he had been hanging in the air with Kavin’s hand around his throat. Now the bandit leader had completely forgotten about him.
Kavin slowly lowered his arm and turned toward the approaching strangers.
At first glance, neither of them looked particularly remarkable. Both wore travel-stained cloaks with their faces hidden beneath deep hoods.
Their clothes were ordinary and neither carried the sort of equipment wealthy spell casters usually displayed.
Yet something about them bothered him.
Beside him, Jasmine had also gone silent. That alone was unusual.
Normally she would have made a joke or a sarcastic comment by now. Instead, her eyes remained fixed on the newcomers as they approached.
"Husband," she said quietly.
Kavin glanced at her. Jasmine didn’t continue immediately. Her gaze shifted toward the woman’s hand.
Following her line of sight, Kavin finally noticed the sword.
It was a slender weapon with a narrow blade and a sharp point. There was nothing especially impressive about it.
What caught his attention was the blood.
Fresh drops slid from the edge and fell onto the dirt road as the woman walked.
Kavin’s eyes narrowed. The sight stirred a vague feeling of unease, but he couldn’t immediately understand why.
Then he looked around the village.
Several houses had broken doors. One roof had partially collapsed. A cart lay overturned in the middle of the street.
The signs of a raid were everywhere, the bandits, however, were missing.
The realization didn’t come all at once. Instead, small details began connecting inside his mind.
When had he last heard one of his men? When had the screaming stopped? Why had nobody returned after all this time?
His gaze returned to the blood-stained sword.
A cold sensation spread through his stomach.
Years of surviving as a bandit had sharpened his instincts. Most of the time they warned him long before his mind understood the danger.
They were warning him now. Without thinking, Kavin reached out and pulled Jake closer.
Jake stumbled in surprise.
"Father?"
"Stay quiet."
The command was so abrupt that Jake immediately obeyed.
Confusion appeared on his face.
His father wasn’t looking at him. He wasn’t looking at the village chief either.
His attention remained fixed entirely on the approaching pair.
Jake followed his gaze and frowned.
The two strangers still seemed to be arguing.
"Fine," the man finally said. "I’ll teach you."
The woman’s eyes lit up. "Really?"
"Yes."
"You promise?"
"I just said yes."
"You have said yes before."
The man pinched the bridge of his nose.
"I promise."
The woman immediately looked pleased with herself.
"See? I knew you would agree."
"You bullied me into agreeing."
"I prefer the word convinced."
Those watching could only stare. The conversation sounded absurdly casual given the situation.
The village chief looked from the strangers to Kavin.
For the first time since the bandits arrived, he noticed uncertainty on the bandit leader’s face.
Jasmine noticed it as well.
She had known Kavin for years. He was arrogant, violent, and reckless, but he wasn’t a coward. If he was reacting like this, then he had reached the same conclusion she had.
The sword wasn’t stained by the blood of villagers. It belonged to their men.
The man finally released a tired sigh.
"Alright, my dearest lady. Now can we focus on the bandits?"
The woman chuckled. "Fine." She muttered something beneath her breath.
The man immediately turned toward her. "I heard that."
"You were supposed to."
Only then did the two of them stop bickering and look ahead.
Their attention settled on Kavin and Jasmine.
Neither stranger moved nor did they threatened anyone. Yet the moment their eyes met, Kavin felt his throat tighten.
He had experienced this feeling only a handful of times in his life.
Each time, it had ended badly for someone.
"...Who are you?" he asked.
"Qe?" The woman’s awkward accent returned once again, mangling the word beyond recognition.
The man immediately covered his face with one hand.
"Qe are the evil helo!" she declared proudly.
A low groan escaped him. "It’s we are the evil hero... ah, I mean heroes."
He pinched the bridge of his nose. At this point, he looked more exhausted by her grammar than by the bandits.
"Babe, let me do the talking. I’ll teach you a few important words later, so just leave this to me."
The woman looked unconvinced but agreed reluctantly."...Fine."
The man nodded in satisfaction before turning his attention back to Kavin.
"Now then."
Kavin subconsciously straightened.
"You see, we need something from you."
His heart skipped a beat. "What do you want from us?" he asked carefully.
The stranger rubbed his hands together.
"We’re actually in need of a little assistance. Nothing too unreasonable. Just a small favor."
Kavin felt some of the tension leave his shoulders, ’so that was it, they want money’
These people were strong, frighteningly strong, but everyone wanted something in the end. If money could solve the problem, then he would gladly empty every coin he possessed.
That was far preferable to fighting whatever these two were.
"Do you want money?" Kavin asked cautiously.
The man blinked, then he shook his head.
"Well, we are broke." The woman immediately nodded. "Vely broke."
"Very broke," the man corrected.
"Extremely poor."
The man ignored her. "But your money won’t be particularly useful to us."
Kavin’s stomach tightened again. If it wasn’t money, then what was it?
"What do you want?" Jasmine asked.
Unlike Kavin, she hadn’t relaxed at all, her eyes remained fixed on the pair.
The woman tilted her head slightly before glancing at Jasmine. Her eyes scanned every part of Jasmine, starting from blood red hair to her slander figure.....once she was done she leaned closer to the man and spoke in their strange language.
"Babe, she’s quite hot, isn’t she?"
The man stared straight ahead.
He didn’t blink nor did he react. He suddenly found the clouds above the village very interesting.
The woman waited. The man continued staring into the distance.
Several seconds passed.
"Babe?" The woman narrowed her eyes.
Meanwhile, the man’s survival instincts were working harder than they ever had in his entire life.
There were questions in life that had correct answers. There were questions that had wrong answers.
Then there were questions that should never be answered at all. Fortunately, years of experience had taught him which category this belonged to.
A cold sweat almost appeared on his back.
This was a trap, a perfectly designed trap.
If he agreed, he was finished, she would beat the crap out of him and her intentions of beating him senseless was also clear.
And If he disagreed, he was also finished, after all he didn’t agree with her.
The safest option was pretending the question had never been asked in the first place.
He immediately changed the subject.
"So!"
The sudden increase in volume startled everyone. Even the woman looked at him in surprise.
The man forced a bright smile onto his face as though nothing unusual had happened.
"We want you to...."
"Babe, I..."
The woman began speaking....the man’s smile twitched.
His instincts screamed one thing...danger!
Whatever she was about to say would definitely drag the conversation back to the topic he had just escaped from.
Absolutely not....he would starve for a month instead of getting beaten senseless by her, whenever she used her fist they were so painful and the most frightening part was that until she was satisfied she wouldn’t stop no matter what!
Unfortunately for her, the man had already disappeared. One moment he was standing beside her.
The next, he wasn’t.
Kavin’s eyes widened. Jasmine’s expression changed immediately too.
For a brief moment, neither of them could even locate him.
The place where he had been standing remained empty while the surrounding air distorted slightly, as though something had moved through it far too quickly for the eye to follow.
Every instinct in their bodies screamed danger. They turned at the same time.
A voice sounded from behind them. "Is this your son?"
Kavin’s blood ran cold. The stranger was standing behind Jake.
Neither he nor Jasmine had seen him move, and before either of them could react...
Thwak!
